Otters Vs Badgers by Anya Glazer

Super talented author/illustrator Anya Glazer manages to combine a hugely important message with rollicking fun and tasty bakes in her new book, Otters Vs Badgers, published by Oxford University Press.

The beginning of the book sets the scene: we have otters on one side of the river and badgers on the other because ‘OTTERS AND BADGERS DO NOT GET ALONG.’ So they stick to their respective sides of the river and that’s that.

Well, not really. Because then we meet Francie, an otter who just loves baking and makes the best cakes around. But in her search for the perfect ingredient she crosses the river and is rumbled by badgers.

The horrified badgers march across to give their enemies what for, leading to a hilarious spread in which otters and badgers hurl insults (and food) at each other. But Francie’s bakes and wise, calming words might just be able to save the day and lead to some much-needed rapprochement.

Anya’s illustrations are gorgeous and the speech bubbles throughout make the text even more lively and fun. There’s also a recipe at the back for yummy-sounding chocolate chip cookies.

All in all, a tasty treat of a book!
