The Road to Goonong by David Cox had my eldest captivated from the start. Full of anecdotes of country living accompanied by amusing illustrations – she learnt, devoured and enjoyed every last detail.
David Cox’ own experience of a childhood in outback Queensland is reflected in this beautiful picture book suitable for older readers to enjoy independently. A wealth of detail is presented and shared about life on a farm, life in the outback. Told via amusing, entertaining and heartfelt musings this one will continue to give with repeated readings.
Great characters are presented on every page – from the hapless (but thankfully with a sense humour) Mrs Johnson, to the swagman and the Schmidt boys. They are brought to life by the entertaining illustrations, which reminded us of the talented Quentin Blake.
Cox captures the hardship of drought and the repurcusions that had on the family.
“Often my dad had to say, ‘It won’t be much of a Christmas this year, I’m afraid.’ ”
… and quickly follows it with a strength of spirit and determination. As the family are forced to leave behind their farm and head to the city, the outlook is very much one of embracing the new
“We were on our way. Excitement began to take the place of sorrow.”
The atmosphere, tone and overall presentation of The Road to Goonong means it has a treasured place in My Book Corner.
Thoroughly enjoyable!
