This book is for all those who have ever wondered why a poppy is used as a symbol for remembrance.

First performed by the poet and performer Tomos Roberts (who performs as Tomfoolery) at the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance in 2021. beautifully written poem is brought to life by Sharon Renttas’ thoughtful illustrations.

Beginning with the First World War, it is a reminder of how those who went to war and those who were left behind, had hopes and dreams, as we do today.

We are told of the sense of loss felt by those who stayed behind.  The unimaginable times those who went to war endured are hinted at and how important it is that we take a moment to walk in the shoes of those who have gone before us.

People then lived lives just like ours,

They played, they worked, they chased their dreams.

The poet John McCrae and his poem, ‘In Flanders Fields’ are mentioned and it becomes clear why poppies, which grew on those fields, were chosen as a symbol of remembrance.

The Second World War and all the sacrifices made in it follows on. Onwards until we realise that poppies are used to remind us of every single person who gave their lives in the pursuit of peace.

The wearing of a poppy is to signify all those who have lost life in conflict. To respect and thank them for their sacrifice.

It is to hold on to hope.

That’s why today we wear a poppy!
For battles past to modern day.
And while courage guides our hearts and minds, That can never slip away.

Sharon Rentta’s illustrations, in black and white, with only the red for the poppies highlight both the harshness of conflict and also the hope of children today.

I was unable to resist reading this out loud and think it would be an excellent resource in the classroom. One that will open the way for many a discussion.

50 pence from the sale of each book will go to the @royalbritishlegion
