The Way to the Zoo from John Burningham is picture book which really is special.
Full of imagination and warmth, it delights in the wonder of childhood.
Sylvie notices a small door in the wall of her bedroom, she thinks she must be dreaming … and so she checks again the next evening. Guess what? It’s still there.
Now this is one wonderful door; down the steps, through the passage and through a second door only to find ‘herself in the zoo with lots of animals looking at her.’
What little girl could just leave them there?? The first night she brings back the little bear,
‘She had to make sure the bear was back in the zoo and the door in her wall was closed before she went to school.’
This is where the fun begins – the penguins have fun splashing in the bath, some animals prove to be smelly – Sylvie has a different approach to each animal, which is an utterly enchanting angle to Burningham’s picture book.
