Marc Martin’s picture books are always a delight – a feast for the eyes, gloriously narrated. A River begins with a little girl staring out of her city window. Her eyes rest on the river winding its way through the busy streets … and so her adventure begins.
On a little ‘silver boat’ she floats ‘towards the horizon.’ She drifts past the ‘busyness’ of the roads and the ‘patchwork quilts’ of fields. She is an observer the darkness of the jungle, and the salty air on the ocean … before the raindrops bring her back to where she started.
Martin’s thoughtful narrative is accompanied by his stunning illustrations. Using an evocative darker palette he brings each landscape to life, not an inch of each page is wasted. A River is a real treat for the eyes.
