Rain

rainRain, from Sam Usher, is the follow up to his much loved picture book Snow. Rain is a beautifully gentle narrative about Sam and his Grandpa as they wait for the rain to clear.

Sam really wants to go outside. He wants to splash in the puddles and go on fantastical voyages. But. Grandpa says they must wait. Wait until the rain stops. Waiting and waiting is really quite hard when you are little, and feeling very excited. But. The wait is worth it. The intrepid duo make their way outside and enjoy a series of wonderful adventures together.

There’s a captivating tone to Usher’s writing which pulls the reader in, them immerses them in those fabulous illustrations. The double page spreads, showing the rain each time Sam looks out of the window are brilliantly effective, with their myriad of grey tones. They are the perfect foil for the vibrant, lively style of the pages depicting Grandpa and Sam’s brilliant adventures when they venture outside.

The focus on the grandpa / grandson relationship is a great angle, and will make this a treasured book to share.

Rain is a wonderfully uplifting picture book, and thankfully there are two more in the series will be released later.
