Yasmeen Ismail‘s latest picture book, I’m A Girl, is a glorious celebration of being a strong, confident, happy girl. Perfect.
Girls can be messy and competitive. They can be brave, spontaneous and curious. They can be themselves, and so can boys. This wonderful message comes across loud and clear as Ismail’s character does all of the above … but gets mistaken for a boy.
She races on her scooter – and likes to win, she likes diving in to the pool and creating plenty of noise.
This brilliant character hears them (the adults!) mistaking her for a boy. She proudly declares ‘I’m a girl!’ before going merrily on her way.
Ismail’s narrative is fun, lively and brilliantly fast paced. The message is abundantly clear, and executed with humour and style. The inclusion of boys too, is a positive touch – and eagle eyed reader will spot a familiar character here!
