Have You Seen My Giraffe? written by Michelle Robinson and illustrated by Claire Powell, is a fantastically fun picture book!
We were so excited to read Have You Seen My Giraffe? in our household – giraffes being one of our favourite animals! My daughter was fascinated with the front cover and promptly went about popping the bubbles – she didn’t seem to notice the giraffe, which goes to show how well you can hide a giraffe in a bath!
Claire Powell’s illustrations in this are fun and colourful. The giraffe’s expression on each page is brilliant. There are so many details in the illustrations that each time you read it you notice something new.
Have You Seen My Giraffe? was an entertaining read and I think it works on a few different levels. For younger children it is hilarious at looking at the wacky and unsuccessful ways you can hide a giraffe. For the older children, it works well as the book talks to the reader – asking where would you keep one in your house? It isn’t so much telling you the story as outlining what could happen if this happened to you. With all ages, it can lead to lots of interesting and fun discussions, about where you would hide a giraffe.
Let’s not forget that it also is a great story too – about winning a giraffe at a fairground but finding that a home isn’t quite suitable for it! The ideas of how you could disguise or hide a giraffe get sillier and sillier throughout the book. A favourite of mine was the house painted like a giraffe. It’s the perfect way to camouflage one!
We’ve only had Have You Seen My Giraffe? in our house for a few days and it’s already been read several times!
