The Light Jar

The Light Jar is Lisa Thompson’s second novel, the first being the incredibly popular The Goldfish Boy.

Meet Nate. In the middle of the night, he and his mum, leave home. Suddenly. Bags packed… without telling Gary, mum’s boyfriend.

Gary must never know where they are going.

Nate and his mum arrive at a tumble down cottage, in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of winter with his mum determined to make it work. But. When she pops out for food, and doesn’t return Nate is scared and alone, hungry and cold. Alone that is until Sam pops up, his imaginary friend from years ago. And then there’s Kitty, with her strange blue lips, and a fierce determination to solve a treasure hunt from years ago.

The joy of The Light Jar comes from Thompson’s ability to convey Nate’s thoughts and feelings so acutely. How would an 11-year old cope in this situation?

The introduction of the imaginary friend provides comfort for both the reader and Nate. Most intriguing are the plot twists surrounding Kitty as she takes Nate along on her quest to solve the treasure hunt within the safety of the grounds the cottage inhabits.

The Light Jar is an incredibly well written novel, with wonderful heart thumping and life affirming moments. It’s packed with adventure and intrigue, and some delightful plot twists.

The Light Jar is an exquisitely written tale, simply perfect for readers aged 10+.
