I adore this fresh take on the Little Red Riding Hood fairy-tale. Told with style and adventure, Marie Voigt’s Red And The City is adorable.
Red, who lives on the edge of the city, must take a cake to her Grandma. Her instructions? Take Woody the dog, and follow the heart flowers. Don’t stray from the path!
But. Oh, my. The city offers such wonderful temptations – the sights, the smells, the food, the toys… there’s so much to distract Red on her own adventure.
Voigt’s wonderfully detailed illustrations offer much to linger on, chat about and spot. My class loved spotting what was lurking in the shadows. Then there’s that final page, at Grandma’s house… and the details that are revealed in those photographs. I love how Voigt ensures we know that this lovely grandma has a rich and varied story behind her. And we are left to wonder… what will Red’s story be?
‘Her heart shone brightly
and she was able to find her own path.’
Red and The City is perfect for little adventurers. Enjoy!
