Fans of Nick Bland’s picture book The Very Cranky Bear are going to love this one – and if you don’t know what we are talking about, read on – this one is fun. I mean, just look at that front cover!
The four cave friends don’t appear in this picture book, instead our bear must contend with a flea.
“Bear is here …
and here is Flea
(but Flea’s a little small to see).”
I love the almost matter of fact approach to the text by Nick Bland, “This is bear” “This is flea” it adds a comforting, predictability to the storyline perfect for younger ones who are just getting used to picture books with a slightly more detailed storyline.
Visually Nick Bland’s book is a pure delight – the use of space, colour and sense of movement make this book a joy to look at. Love the picture of bear balancing very precariously on a log, “floating, floating out to sea.”
Bear’s final acceptance of flea, makes for a neat story about friendship, acceptance and learning about differences.
