Author Interview: Davide Cali

Davide Cali - My Book Corner InterviewI am honoured to welcome internationally acclaimed Italian author Davide Cali to My Book Corner as part of his first tour of Australia.

His newest title will be launched May/June 2012 as part of his first tour of Australia! 10 Little Insects is a hilarious graphic novel spoof of Agatha Christie’s murder mystery Ten Little Indians (but with insects!).

In the meantime Davide Cali has popped in to answer the My Book Corner questions … and yes, we did sneak in the Marmite / Vegemite question!

Tell us about you in 25 words or less.

I’m a guy who loves telling stories and playing the guitar. The first is my job, the second is just for pleasure.

What makes you happy?

Playing my guitars, cooking and eating Japanese food, a good beer.

Where have you always wanted to visit, but haven’t made it to … yet?

There are so many places where I wish to go! I would like to visit Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, because I love Asian culture (and food!). I grew up with (loud) American music and movies so I’d like to go to the USA, especially to NYC (I’m a great fan of Woody Allen’s movies), L.A. (I used to be a big fun of Guns n’ Roses), and Chicago (because I’m a great fan of Billy Corgan and his Smashing Pumpkins as well). What else? I think Quebec could be very interesting and then Sweden and all the Northern Europe. I like cold countries! Now, while spring is blooming everywhere in Europe I’m spending a month for work in cold Denmark. Nice country.

Where is your favourite place to write?

I don’t have any special one. Until last year I used to write mostly at home. Then I bought a laptop and travel much of the time, so it doesn’t really matter where I am. I write in airports, in hotels. Sometimes I write in the park.

What’s the strangest question you’ve ever been asked?

I did a book I think you know, called I love Kissing You. During a public meeting in France I explained that the book just tells real episodes about me and my girlfriend at the time. So a little girl asked me: “Did you ask the permission to write about her before doing the book?”

It was a pretty funny question. I said: “Well, no I guess, I did not.”

And the girl: “And does she still love you?”

Who or what inspires you?

Everything around me inspires me. In my books there’s always something true, and something I love for real. So, all my passions, books, insects, rock, sooner or later make it into my books.

Tell us about your next project in 25 words or less.

I have many ones at the moment. A book about Paris in 2050, a book for rock guitar fans and a couple of ones illustrated with photos.

 Just for fun

Tea or coffee? Coffee! And tea sometimes.

Paper books or e-books?  I don’t know too much about the second ones. But I like everything that is new, so maybe, both?

Vegemite or Marmite? Mmm… I guess I’m not enough prepared about it. I don’t even know them. Maybe I could taste both when I’ll be in Australia and then give you my vote?

Write or type? Type.

Poetry or prose? Prose. I admit: I can’t understand poetry. I read some, and even liked it, but generally it’s not my stuff.

Beach or bush? Bush, definitely.

Hot or cold? Cold! I love winter. I can’t stand it in any warm place for a long time!
