A Very Happy Ramadan by A.M. Dassau, Illustrated by Abeeha Tariq

Rayhan wants to be just like everyone else!

It’s Ramadan and it seems as if all his family are fasting except for him, so Rayhan decides he will too.

The up side of this is he can avoid eating porridge and salad!

Unfortunately the strawberries from the garden prove too tempting and before he knows what he’s doing, Rayhan pops one in his mouth. Oh no!

Surely Adam who lives next door will understand but Adam is fasting too and he’s managing to stick to it.

What can Rayhan do? Could  there be someone else in his family who isn’t fasting either?

As Rayhan finds out more about Ramadan, he learns that there are lots of other things he can do besides fasting and the most important of them all is to be with family.

Poor Rayhan looks so upset when he breaks his fast that it is impossible not to feel sympathy for him.

This is a true celebration of family and beliefs with endearing characters. A.M. Dassu has managed to pack in a lot of information in a very entertaining story.

I love the vibrant colours Abeeha Tariq has chosen. The illustrations are so full of pattern and interest and convey Rayhan’s emotions clearly.

This superb picture book features a non-fiction spread with a description of Ramadan and a delicious iftar spread.

I think this would be a great introductory resource for learning about Ramadan.
