Big Hid is the debut picture book from author / illustrator Roisin Swales. It’s an adorable tale about friendship.
Two characters, Big and Little – a squirrel and tortoise – are brilliant friends, who do absolutely everything together. This inseparable duo have dress up, climb trees and even chew stuff, together. It’s a great friendship.
Then one day, something happens – Big doesn’t want to do anything, and so ‘he hid!’ Well this leaves Little quite confused – he really just wants to play with his friend. The simple yet effective language captures this adorable character as he tries everything to coax Big to come out of his shell. Little really does miss him. Little eventually stumbles upon the solution, and it really is quite adorable – rendering this a beautiful book to read at bedtime.
Swales’s illustrations are wonderfully effective. Bold colours in a striking palette grab the attention of little readers, with background colours carefully changing to depict change of pace and mood as Big Hid progresses.
Big Hid is an accomplished picture book debut from Roisin Swales, one to watch!
