Captain Pug: The Dog who Sailed the Seas is an enchanting, witty chapter book from Laura James and Eglantine Ceulemans.
Lady Miranda’s pug is a delightfully pampered pooch, thanks to little Lady Miranda’s rather elegant lifestyle. Well, with freshly baked jam tarts for breakfast each morning, plus Running Footmen Liam and Will who ‘did anything that Lady Miranda wanted outside the house’ – she certainly has an interesting life!
When Miranda gets invited to a birthday party at the boating lake there’s only one thing for it … she simply must dress up Pug in a captain’s outfit, and rename him Captain Pug. Naturally! Except Pug doesn’t like water, not one bit.
In a unfortunate turn of events, involving a very tempting picnic basket, Pug and Miranda get separated. Miranda, ably assisted by Liam and Will of course, venture on a madcap chase to find Pug and get him back … which is totally sedate in comparison to the crazy series of events that Pug finds himself caught up in. Poor Pug is convinced that he must prove himself to be a fabulous sea faring Captain in order to see Lady Miranda again. Let’s just say a rowing boat, yacht, ocean liner are all involved.
Eglantine Ceuleman’s illustrations feature on each page, they are absolutely crucial in bringing Pug’s madcap adventures to life. She captures the put upon Running Footmen Liam and Will as they assist Lady Miranda just brilliantly.
Laura James’s fast paced and witty narrative is fresh and original, Captain Pug is a brilliant character who will be back as Cowboy Pug … the mind boggles!
