Author Interview: Claire Freedman

Claire FreedmanClaire Freedman is the talented writer behind the wonderful picture book series featuring those Aliens and their underpants.

The aliens have been a HUGE hit on My Book Corner, so I’m not ashamed to admit (honest!) doing the ‘happy dance’ when Claire Freedman said a resounding ‘yes’ to our request for an interview.

I am SO excited to have Claire here at My Book Corner, answering our questions and with a very special message for Australia …

Tell us about you in 25 words or less. I’ll try! I’m a hardworking, fun loving, bit of a day-dreamer who loves being creative, colourful and happy – whatever I’m doing!

What makes you happy?  Being totally carefree.

Where have you always wanted to visit, but haven’t made it to … yet?

My brother has lived in Perth, Australia for over 25 years. I would love to visit but can’t bear the thought of being stuck on that plane for hours and not being able to get off!

Where is your favourite place to write?

I write in my spare room which has become my office. It is tiny, and crammed to bursting with books etc, but has windows both sides, so there is lots of light. It overlooks our garden and I can see the bird bath and bird box, which means I can watch the birds enjoying themselves. Right now an adorable pair of robins are nesting in the box – very exciting!

What’s the best thing about being a published author?

Seeing children giggle when they read my books.

What’s the strangest question you’ve ever been asked?

Children ask me all sorts of unusual, funny questions – but I can’t remember any particular one that stands out!

Who or what inspires you?

Nature, friends, family, animals, anything.

What is your worst habit?

I fiddle with my hair – always have done!

Your favourite word(s) and why?

Serendipity – it’s a happy word!

I LOVE the aliens, dinosaurs, and the pirates of course, all with their underpants obsessions. But, I must ask, how did you come to create a book about underpants?

Everyone asks this question – I guess the answer is that I just thought it was a bit of fun and didn’t expect the whole book to become so popular.

Did we forget anything?

Can I please say ‘G’day’ to Paul, Jacquie, Liam and Anouska in Perth, Australia?  Thanks Emma!!

Just for fun

Tea or coffee? Tea

Paper books or e-books? Paper – every time!

Vegemite or Marmite? Marmite

Write or type? Write THEN type

Poetry or prose? both

Beach or bush? beach

Hot or cold? cold
