Author Interview: Dr Dominic Walliman

DominicWallimanDr Dominic Walliman just happens to be the first author with a PhD in Quantum Device Physics to be interviewed on My Book Corner.

He’s clearly suitably qualified to write a fabulous children’s book, Professor Astro Cat’s Atomic Adventure, and Professor Astro Cat’s Solar System

So what would a Quantum Physicist prefer… time travel or space travel??

What makes you happy?

I am happiest when I am creating something new or learning something new. Apart from that, the simple things in life make me very happy, some good food, a good book and a nice place to sit and read.

Your day job is programming Quantum Computers … what inspired you to make the leap into writing fabulous books for children?

I have been writing things for fun for years: comic books, movie scripts, short stories so when Ben came to me to ask if I wanted to write a book about space with him, I jumped at the chance! To be honest, I didn’t feel like it was much of a leap, it was exactly what I wanted to do, I love explaining science well.

Where is your favourite place to write?

I suppose it depends on how I’m feeling, but I’m not too fussy. Sometimes I write in coffee shops as it is nice to get a change of environment, sometimes I love somewhere quiet to really concentrate.

What’s on your TBR pile at the moment?

At the moment I have, “Life on the Edge” by Jim Al-Khalili and Johnjoe McFadden, and “Letters from a Stoic” by Seneca.

What’s the strangest question you’ve ever been asked?

To be honest, I can’t remember being asked any strange questions. Perhaps there are no strange questions just strange people.

What’s your worst habit?

Barraging myself with too much information from too many angles. But I’m trying to get better at turning down all the noise.

Your favourite word?

My girlfriend says I say brilliant a lot, so I guess that is one. Why? Well I guess, on the grand scheme of things, I do think life is brilliant.

Can you give us a glimpse / peek / hint at your current WIP?

Professor Astro is currently tinkering away at a secret project in his lab which is a bit too early to reveal. But apart from that, I’m working on some videos for a new youtube channel which will be all about explaining physics to the masses.

Just for fun

Tea or coffee? I like both! But mostly tea.

Paper books or e-books? Again I like both, but sometimes there is nothing and nice as a proper hard back book.

Cake or chocolate? Chocolate. But the occasional cake with a cup of tea is pretty great. I just like everything apparently.

Write or type? Writing to get ideas down or be creative, I love drawing and you can’t easily draw on a computer. Then typing for everything else.

Poetry or prose? Prose.

Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin? You might think I would be in Ravenclaw, but I think I have more affinity with Hufflepuff.

Hot or cold? Cold.

Time travel or space travel? Time travel for sure!

His books are a great way help kids read while soaking up important Science concepts without even knowing it. Ironically, Dominic’s amazing mind is probably not yet smart enough to fathom how much his Domain of Science youtube video series has helped not just young minds by 100’s of thousands of older minds enage a wide range of STEM topics. I want to get a bunch of his posters hanging in my grandkids rooms.
