Extra Yarn

 Extra Yarn

Mac Barnett’s tale of Annabelle and her Extra Yarn has plenty of twists to keep all young readers entertained – perfect for those ready for a slightly more detailed picture book.

It was a ‘cold afternoon, in a cold little town’ when Annabelle discovered a box filled to the brim with yarn – don’t you just love that word?!

Well, Annabelle gets knitting .. and knitting … and knitting. There seems to be no end to the supply of this wonderful yarn.

There are several twists to this story which really make it extra special.

Annabelle and her little dog Mars start to attract attention in their new knitted togs. Luke calls them ‘ridiculous’ and Mr Norman declares it ‘a terrible distraction’ … in her confident yet unconfrontational manner Annabelle solves both problems.

Annabelle’s transformation of the town attracts quite a lot of attention mainly from a very pompous Archduke with a very twitchy moustache …. no spoilers, you need to grab your copy to see how this fabulous twist develops.

Barnett’s clever narrative has a very calm edge, with a twist of magic – such a delight to read.

Teemed with Klassen’s fabulously stylish and entertaining illustrations, Barnett and Klassen make a great combination indeed.

Winner of the 2012 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award.
