Daisy and Hazel are back! Robin Stevens’ latest instalment of theWells & Wong mystery series –First Class Murder.
The determined duo are being whisked off on the holiday of a life time through Europe, on none other than the extremely grand Orient Express thanks to Hazel’s dad. There’s just one condition. NO sleuthing. To be honest Hazel is quite relieved, Daisy … not so.
I adore novels that begin with a map … what a treat. First Class Murder opens with a fabulous map of the train thanks to Nina Tara. The dining and sleeping carriages are all set out very clearly, meticulously labelled with the position of each and every character, this can only mean one thing … this isn’t going to the be the quite holiday Hazel and her dad had hoped for.
Whilst the Orient Express is chugging its way through Europe, dinner is interrupted by an ear piercing scream. As the characters rush back to their compartments they make a grim discovery, a missing necklace and a terrible murder.
Daisy pulls Hazel straight on to the case, whilst trying their very best to duck under the radar of Mr Wong, they frantically pull together clues and evidence as there set on a determined path to discover the culprit.
Robin Stevens characters are brilliantly rendered.
Daisy and Hazel, the 2 constants in this series, are emerging and developing as fabulous characters the reader can relate to. With a deft touch Stevens highlights Hazel’s Singapore background, she gently nudging her readers’ focus towards the ignorance of some characters who make misguided judgements based on Hazel’s appearance.
The Wells and Wong mysteries are quickly gaining quite a following and for good reason. Carefully woven plots, plenty of intriguing twists and turns, I can’t wait for the next mystery!
