Florence Frizzball

Florence FrizzballI have a wonderful 3 year old daughter with the curliest hair, so Claire Freedman and  Jane Massey’s Florence Frizzball was a perfect read for our family!

This is an ideal picture book for pre-schoolers with simple, fun rhyming text. It is a book that all children can identify with, as there aren’t many children who enjoy having their hair brushed or combed!

The story focuses very much on the relationship between Florence and her brother Ben and the fun they have together. Florence has very frizzy hair and in contrast Ben as ‘neat and flat’ hair. Unfortunately, Florence finds her frizzy hair can cause problems, especially during play with Ben.

‘but hugs turn very tickly…. ‘

‘our faces get all prickly!’

This all leads Florence to go the hairdressers to get the hair she really desires, straight and smooth, just like her brother’s. However, when her hair is finally straight, will she be happy with the result?

Florence Frizzball is a really warm book and the illustrations by Jane Massey really convey this. The pictures are just beautiful. I love the pages where Florence goes to the hairdressers – they really show how little she is in comparison to the shop and the hairdresser’s chair.

Florence Frizzball is lovely picture book celebrating differences and the relationships between siblings.
