Author Interview: Heather Rose – aka Angelica Banks

Heather RoseOur latest author interview is with Heather Rose. She is one half of the awesome duo who penned Finding Serendipity, published by Allen & Unwin.

Now, I like to think that My Book Corner’s particular questions bring out the best in people. I have to say …

I REALLY enjoyed reading Heather’s answers. Keep reading for the link to Danielle Wood’s answers too!

Tell us about you in 25 words or less.

I live on the beach and love swimming in the sea all year round. I almost always wear black. I am often awake at 4am.

What makes you happy?

Sunshine. As does living by the sea, making cakes, hanging out with my family, seeing my friends and lying in bed reading. And my Dad still being alive. In fact, every one I love just being alive and well every day.

Where have you always wanted to visit, but haven’t made it to … yet?

To Argentina to see my favourite soccer team and learn to salsa. And to Tierra del Fuego to feel the wind on my face.

Where is your favourite place to write?

Wearing my pyjamas, ugg boots and dressing gown at 9am at my desk upstairs. Or in the Ladder Room at Varuna with fellow writers in nearby rooms – Kate Richards, Felicity Volk, Kristina Olsson in particular – and snow falling.

What was it like working with Danielle Wood – did she have an annoying habits?!

Writing with Danielle was the most fun I’ve ever had writing. She is immensely talented, hugely skilled and excellent company. Her most annoying habit is being so accomplished at such a young age.

What’s the best thing about being a published author?

I’m pathetically grateful to see my work in print.

What’s the strangest question you’ve ever been asked?

How do you clean the anal gland on a guinea pig?

Who or what inspires you?

Being on my own in the wilds of a forest or near the sea. Listening to a mountain river. Rain on the roof during the night. The blank page. A good book. Anyone who’s passionate. Danielle, my Dad, my children.

What is your worst habit?

Taking life too seriously.

Your favourite word(s)?

Anything French or Spanish and all sorts of food words like penne a la arrabiata.

This is your first novel for children, what were the challenges you found in the switch from writing for an adult audience?

It was a little like going from a lap pool to the sea. Less boundaries, more creatures.

Did we forget anything?

My blood type is b positive and that’s my rule for life as well.

Just for fun

Tea or coffee? As I’m allergic to caffeine I have to make do with alternatives like dandelion, chai and rooibos so everyone thinks I’m a hippy.

Paper books or e-books? Hard backs or paper backs, in bed at 4am wondering if sleep will return

Vegemite or Marmite? Promite on good sourdough, vegemite on a crumpet.

Write or type? Scrawl with a black fineliner. After 5 novels still can’t touch type.

Poetry or prose? Both are essential for a good life.

Beach or bush? Long white sand beach, green waves, rolling swell.

Hot or cold? Hot. Sweltering. Balmy. Blistering. I’ll take it all.

We simply couldn’t have Heather Rose with out Danielle Wood. You can enjoy Danielle’s answers here.
