How Not To Be Weird is a gloriously humorous chapter book from Dawn McNiff. Aimed at the 7-10 category Woody has decided he is fed-up being weird. There’s his name for a start, then the granny jumper his mum makes him wear … then those packed lunches which are most definitely weird.
It really is time to action, so Woody begins making his all important rules.
Deciding not to be weird at the start of a new school year, at a completely new school, should work out just right. Especially as Woody has just reconnected with his Dad’s mum – GlamMa – who does lots of brilliantly un-weird things such as buying him a new phone (cool!), buying him un-weird clothes and taking him for his first ever un-weird hair cut. Things are looking up …
… but things don’t always go to plan. There’s his mum who dresses up like a sheep for her work, his accident prone dog Gooner … will they all be improved thanks to Woody discovering his Dad’s lucky charm?
McNiff’s humorous yet touching narrative, creates a wonderful page turner of a book. Woody discovers there’s more to people than their outward, confident exterior. Everybody has wonderfully weird qualities, and that’s pretty cool.
How Not To Be Weird is about finding your inner confidence, doing the right thing and having fun in the process. Brilliantly uplifting, and hugely addictive – what a stonkingly great story.
