Impossible! by Tracey Corderoy and Tony Neal, is the jolly story of an unlikely friendship between a laundry-running dog and a little lost crab with a shared love of the seaside! For Crab it is home and for Dog a place he has only travelled to in his dreams. Living miles away from the coast Dog has always believed it impossible to ever travel the distance to visit it. However, a chance meeting with Crab gives him the courage to follow his dreams.
Dog’s day begins like any other in the laundry. Craving the smells of the shore, he tries out a new washing powder – Ocean magic – which promises seaside freshness with every wash! However, he gets a little more than he bargained for when, along with the smells of the hot sun, the salty waves and the golden sand, a dizzy little crab turns up in his washing basket!
Together the duo try to come up with a plan to return Crab to the seaside. The word ‘impossible’ sighs from Dog’s mouth on several occasions. He is worried about the distance, worried about leaving his town. Crab encourages him with the motto ‘things are only impossible if you say they are’ and together they journey in Dog’s car with the rather apt number plate OC3AN!
Their journey takes weeks, the reader travels along with them, sightseeing and meeting characters on the way. The theme of trusting in yourself and believing you can achieve is revisited again and again. Providing a great opportunity to discuss self-belief with young children. Dream, believe, achieve.
So does Dog reach it to the shore? Does Crab return to home? Do they overcome the seemingly impossible? You’ll have to read it to see. But what I can tell you is that this is a delightful book, with a well-thought out message and loveable characters. Dreams can come true.
