In The Sea by David Elliott is a beautifully written picture book celebrating all that lurks beneath the sea with language and illustrations.
The vibrant illustrations from Holly Meade are striking woodcuts which leap off the page and demand attention. From the comical puffer fish to the elegant orca’s the accompanying water colours reflect an exciting and eclectic mix of animals to be discovered in the ocean.
Each illustration is paired with perceptive, minimal verse from David Elliott. The child like simplicity of much of the language is interspersed with gems including “belligerent” and “elegant torpedo” and form inspired descriptions such as “a sky of sand” and “a staircase with no end”
This is the perfect picture book to pour over, wonder at and enjoy.
