Kid’s parents have disappeared but he does have two very special friends, Audrey the hen and Harriet the pig.
They tell him stories of his parents, Buck and Bess, and their bravery.
Kid dreams of being big and brave enough to leave the farm and search for his family. Despite warnings from Ma, the sheepdog who rules the farm, Kid knows he has to try.
The only thing is, Ma says no-one who escapes is allowed to return.
Kid has a feeling he must go and works all day to jump higher, to butt harder and to climb better than he ever has before.
Can Kid bear to leave Audrey and Harriet behind? On the other hand, he doesn’t want to lead them into danger.
It soon becomes clear who Kid’s friends are in this journey of discovery as the trio face danger from storms, snakes, fallen logs, dehydration and the worry over the discovery of a beast in the woods. The question is, will the beast be their friend or their enemy?
Kid is careful to keep his eyes to the ground, is that fresh goat poo, are those goat tracks?
Reading this book felt like stepping into a world of, not only farmyard animals, but birds of prey, trees, insects, landscape and yes, there is a brief mention of the different types of animal poo!
An orphan goat, raised by a hen and a pig, this is a truly heartwarming story of life on the farm, friendship, the encouragement to follow dreams and the value of family.
Kid took me back to stories such as ‘Charlotte’s Web’ and ‘A Pig Called Lollipop’. There’s a sense of respect and value given to animals in these books.
Peter Carnavas has written and illustrated a book which would be perfect for a goodnight story or a calming moment in the school day.
What an inspiration, Kid is a real peek into the natural world. Definitely just the job for learning all about both farm and wild animals.
