Look Up! by Nathan Byron & Dapo Adeola

LookUp

Are you reading this review on your phone? Okay, I give you permission to read on, but be warned. . . I’m going to tell you all about a book that will inspire you to LOOK UP.

That’s right, I’m talking about the Waterstone Book Prize winning title ‘Look up!’ by Nathan Byron and Dapo Adeola. And it’s picture book perfection.

Rocket is a plucky little girl who dreams of being the greatest astronaut, star-catcher, space-traveller who has ever lived, and she’s super pumped to watch The Phoenix Meteor Shower, that’s due to rain down later that night. In fact, Rocket’s going to rope the whole town in to come join her in her stargazing. Her endlessly scrolling brother Jamal has been tasked with taking Rocket to the park to watch the lightshow unfold. Jamal might even get to see it too if he can tear his eyes away from his phone.

This is a story with a HUGE heart, and it does something very close to my heart too, it beautifully weaves non-fiction right the way through. Little readers learn about Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space, as well as the ins and outs of meteor showers.

My six-year-old put it down, took a deep breath, and declared. . . I’m going to be an astronaut. So, there you have it. . . a book that inspires little people to have big dreams – you can’t ask for more than that.
