Making It Up As You Go Along by Patricia Forde, Illustrated by Mary Murphy

‘Making It Up As You Go Along’ is a fabulous resource written by the Laureate na nÓg (Ireland’s Children’s Literature Laureate).

Featuring a drip feed, so it doesn’t feel too overwhelming, information is set amongst creative writing exercises.

Lots of story prompts are provided for inspiration and although writing can be a lonely occupation, there are plenty of ideas for working with a partner or group.

From story inspiration to plot, setting, characters, beginnings, endings, world building and on to a variety of writing styles, this useful guide to creative writing has something for everyone.

At the end of each chapter is an advice letter written by authors such as Catherine Doyle, Derek Landy and Eoin Colfer.

Perfect as a present for a young writer and a useful tool for those teaching creative writing with handy writing prompts and ideas.

‘Making It Up As You Go Along’ would be a superb resource for schools and libraries.
