Marc Martin’s picture books are true works of art. Picture book fanatics are going to adore pouring over Max, a touching story about friendship.
Max is a rather elegant seagull. He lives by the seaside where he is known for being ‘a little bit cheeky, and a little bit mischievous.
Max absolutely adores fish and chips, so unsurprisingly his best friend of many years is Bob – the owner of a wonderful fish and chip shop. Max visits Bob at his shop every single day, and in the evenings they even go fishing together.
One long summer, few visitors means poor Bob has to move on.
‘The next time Max came to visit, Bob was gone.’
Marc Martin’s exquisite narrative captures Max’s despair as he travels far and wide searching for his missing friend. There’s a gentle calmness to his words, which capture Max’s feelings wonderfully.
Printed on wonderfully thick paper Martin’s illustrations are a joy to behold. Double page spreads sit alongside smaller illustrations which gently progress the story. Martin’s illustrations have a glorious vintage vibe to them, which sit perfectly with the seaside town setting.
Max is a wonderful story which will enjoy plenty of repeat readings.
