Ruffles and the Red, Red Coat by David Melling

Ruffles

For all the parents who’ve had the coat battle with a small child (and if you haven’t yet, it’s coming!), enjoy this tale of Ruffles the little dog. Ruffles loves many things, shown in brilliant thumbnail pics, like scratching and chewing, but definitely does NOT like his new coat. Maybe doggy pal Ruby can show him the error of his ways.

I loved the look of this hardback too, with its cloth spine and colour choice. Maybe it appealed to me as a fan of Miffy books, with a limited, bright palette, block colour backgrounds and an easy-to-read font.

This is a joy to read aloud. Pre-schoolers will love the bright colours and that they can follow the illustrations and join in so well without needing to be able to read a word. So much scope for acting out all the ‘doing’ words.

Perfectly pitched as you’d expect from a David Melling book, I can well imagine this becoming a firm family favourite to be read over and over again.
