Author Interview: Shamini Flint

Shamini FlintWe are delighted that Shamini Flint, the author of the incredibly popular The Diary series, has popped into My Book Corner to answer our questions …. enjoy!

What makes you happy?

Watching my children play soccer or rugby or cricket or taekwondo. I always persuade them to take up whichever sport I feel like writing about!
Where have you always wanted to visit, but haven’t made it to … yet?

I’d love to go north of the Arctic Circle and visit the polar bears. I’m very worried about them because the Artic ice is melting quickly and they’ll lose their homes if we don’t fix climate change.

Where is your favourite place to write?

I live in a very old house with creaky wooden floors and black and white shutters. My office window looks out on a very big tree where a woodpecker sometimes stops for a bite to eat. I love writing there because there’s always something to look at out of the window when I get stuck or bored.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?

I’d love us humans to look after the planet better.

What’s the best thing about being a published author?

I like to think that somewhere out there there’s a kid who’s reading about Marcus and giggling and thinking – he’s just like me!

What’s the strangest question you’ve ever been asked?

Which book in all the world do you wish you’d written? Answer: All of them (except the boring ones).

Who or what inspires you?

President Obama, children’s authors, scientists and kids who love reading

What is your worst habit?

Pretending to listen to my kids when I’m actually thinking about a book and saying ‘mmmm’ as if I know what they said. Drives them nuts!

Your favourite word?

“GOALLLLLLL!!!”

What is the key thing you’d like your young readers to gain from the Diary Books?
That’s its really ok to be rubbish at stuff as long as you always try your best and have some fun.

Just for fun

Tea or coffee? Hot chocolate with marshmallows

Paper books or e-books? Paper (as long as its from renewable sources)

Vegemite or Marmite? Yuk – neither!!

Write or type? Type, but with only two fingers

Poetry or prose? Prose. Nothing ever rhymes for me.

Beach or bush? Jungle

Hot or cold? Breezy and warm
