Aimed at readers aged 8-12, Starlight Academy follows Cassie March, a talented dancer who does not relish the thought of spending the next term in boarding school. Up until now it’s just been Cassie and her Dad, but dad is keen for Cassie to move on with her life.
Through Cassie’s eyes Starlight Academy first appears as suffocating and oppressive. The rules, restrictions and timetables are hard for her to get used to.
As Cassie slowly becomes absorbed in to every day school life, there are more than a few bumps along the road. Friendship dilemmas present themselves in the form of a number mysterious bullying episodes that Cassie gets the blame for, and then there is the all important end of term play. It’s the part Cassie has been aching to perform.
Jess Renison’s characters are well developed, the plot moves along at a comfortable speed with plenty of little twists along the way.
Boarding school, an element of dancing and a whole heap of fun sums up the first in the Starlight Academy series by Jess Renison.
