The Barrumbi Kids is a great quality chapter book from Australian author Leonie Norrington. Published in 2002, and with two more in the series, this one is still going strong and is a must for your book corner.
Dale and Tomias have different backgrounds and share a love for their country. In an approach reminiscent of Huckleberry Finn, the reader follows these modern day boys as they struggle through the school term dreaming of holidays.
The characters and plot are well developed, with pace and intrigue to hold the attention of both boys and girls. Elements of the Aboriginal culture of the Barrumbi kids are effortlessly integrated in to this intriguing and enjoyable chapter book.
Messages of respect for the land, knowledge of animals plus tails of wagging school and winning the writing competition are all combined to produce an enjoyable chapter book which will certainly appeal to this age group. Escaping crocodiles, swimming in waterfalls, a close call with a bush fire and dealing with siblings – it’s all here!
Pure and simple – The Barrumbi Kids is good quality fun and enjoyment.
