The Comet by Joe Todd-Stanton

Winner of the 2023 Yoto Carnegie Shadower’s Choice Medal for Illustration

Shortlisted for the 2023 Yoto Carnegie Medal for Illustration.

Nyla loves her home, where the trees stand tall, the skies are full of stars, and she can fall asleep to the sound of the waves.

She and her father enjoy time spent together; they even saw a comet once.

Then, Dad has to find a new job and they have to move to the city.

From their new house Nyla can only see grey towers and count seven stars. Will it ever feel like home?

What happens when Nyla spies a comet?

Using her imagination, Nyla’s ensuing creative endeavours inspire dad and help him to understand how she is feeling. Perhaps everything will be well after all, and together they will be able to build a new home and community.

A gentle story about how tricky it can be to move house and set down roots. How it takes hope and effort, time and patience to make a new place feel like home. Most of all, how it can be done together.

This would be a wonderful book to read at night for star gazing or during the day to inspire creativity.

It reminds us of the magic of the everyday; when we work together to create a home in which we feel cared for.

This is a  story of moving house, full of warmth, creativity, magic and love.
