The Great Dragon Bake Off is the latest picture book from the wonderfully funny Nicola O’Byrne. At its heart this is a picture book about finding the courage to be yourself, no matter what. Underlying that are some glorious references to some very familiar celebrity chefs, you’ll be chuckling away, I guarantee it.
Flamie Oliver is a particularly fierce dragon, he’s even a member of the Ferocious Dragon Academy … it’s just that he likes to bake too. In secret. As it’s not very ‘dragony’.
Flamie enjoys cooking but, feels sad that he has no one to share it with. Things get worse when it’s time for the Academy finals … Flamie has spent so long perfecting his pastry and baking skills, he quite forgot about trying to be a ferocious dragon.
Flamie is given one last chance to graduate … he must kidnap and eat a princess!
Flamie is a good dragon at heart, and so luckily there’s no gruesome ending. Without too many spoilers I can tell you that a baking judging panel – consisting of Scaly Berry and Heston Blowitall – crops up.
The Great Dragon Bake Off is a wonderfully tale, full of O’Byrne’s glorious lively and vibrant illustrations. What fun!
