The Little Old Man Who Looked Up At The Moon

Little Old Man - Pamela Allen

“Once upon a time …”

and so begins The Little Old Man Who Looked Up At The Moon, with those four little words that don’t often find their way in to modern children’s literature.

Enchanting and thoughtful with each turn of the page, this charming picture book follows “a little old woman” who puts on her best bonnet and red coat before going out to find the answer to her husband’s question …

” ‘Where do we come from?’ he asked.

Where do we go, and why are we here?’ “

…. and so begins the journey. The turn of each page reveals a stunningly illustrated animal on each. From the Rooster (personal favourite) to the duck, each are asked the same question by the little old woman. Being animals, they each give predictable answers … “Quack!” and “moooo!” being amongst the best!

The predictability and the reassuring pattern takes a potential heavy question and turns it in to something quite … well, innocently childlike. Perfect. It’s the little old woman who finally answers the man’s question – “Who am I?’ with the reassuring …

” ‘Why, you are my husband,’ she laughed

and she gave him a great big hug.”

This is a touching story sure to delight the fans of Pamela Allen.
