The Secret Life of Bugs, Bees & Trees by Moira Butterfield, Illustrated by Vivian Mineker

I think this might be one of my favourite books of the year!

A fascinating blend of fact and fiction, Moira Butterfield at first introduces us to the world of Luna the Ladybird.

A world of insect facts are combined with stories such as ‘How the Butterflies Got Their Colour’ and accompanying myths from all around the world.

We learn about a variety of different insects and their homes.  There are bugs which swim, are noisy, in addition to those who are giant or tiny bugs and much more.

After reading this section, I came away determined to create a ‘Ladybird Lodge’ from cones, twigs and sticks.

Next we meet Buzzwing the honey bee.

‘Honey bees have been making honey since the first people walked the Earth and the first stories were told.’

I loved the bee tale from Greece, ‘The Baby and the Bees’ as well as the stories from India, Australia and Thailand. From learning about the bee dance to how life in the hive works, there is so much to discover about our friends the bees,

And don’t forget to leave a small pile of sticks in the corner of your garden for bees and other insects.

The third, and final section of this book is devoted to trees. Here we meet Oakheart the Brave.

From tiny acorns great oaks grow, and every stage of this process is clearly described. Interspersed with magical tales from Britain, Persia and Norway, is plenty of information on trees throughout the seasons, uses of wood and so much more.

I am very proud that a little acorn I planted has grown to become a little tree and after reading this superb book, I know a lot more about it!

Packed to the brim with information and fascinating fables, there is something to discover in this wonderful book for every reader!

The illustrations by Vivian Mineker are full of fun and so colourful; this book fairly sings with joy and enthusiasm for nature.

An absolute winner of a book!

Thank you to Happy Yak (Quarto) Publishing for the review copy.
