Ginika is furious. Her parents have sent her to live with her grandparents in their boarding house by the sea and she doesn’t want to go. Summer holidays are meant to be for having fun!
A visit to the beach changes her life forever when she comes face to face with Peri, a boy who swims like a dolphin and talks in bubbles. With every encounter, they learn more and more about each other’s worlds as they try to communicate. Her life on land is far from his at sea but they soon form a friendship. Peri becomes enchanted with the lights and noise of the small but bustling town and Ginika offers him to the chance to explore land when she disguises him in human clothes. Ted, who is at the town to recuperate from an accident, joins their adventures at the seaside too and the trio get involved in many escapades.
With news that her parents are not returning to Bridleways Bay anytime soon, Ginika has to navigate a new school, new friends she doesn’t quite trust and also accept that her dance friends back home aren’t quite what they seem after all.
Amid Ginika’s unsettled home-life, Peri begins to change the more he visits the town. She’s never considered herself brave before but time is running out to find his sea family and she must face her fears before her world and that of those around her, changes forever.
The Storm Swimmer is a fantastic story of friendship against all odds and also the joy of accepting yourself for who you are and not what others expect you to be.
Paddy Donnelly’s illustrations capture both worlds with superb colours and details that make you want to find the nearest ocean and dive in!
