In Fingal’s Cave, on the Scottish Isle of Staffa, lives a giant called Benandonner. He is so tall he can see right across the water to Ireland. On the coast of County Antrim lives a giant called Finn McCool, he’s so tall he can see all the way over to Scotland.
Finn & Benandonner spend all day arguing about who is the best giant. Who has the best house? Who’s the better swimmer? Who’s the strongest? They decide to settle it once and for all in a fight. Finn begins to throw huge rocks into the sea to make a path over to Scotland, and Benandonner does the same until they nearly meet in the middle. A little wary of each other ‘s tall claims of giant perfection their ridiculous bickering begins to get out of hand.
Finn’s wife, Oona, has had enough of their nonsense and decides to settle the matter of who is the best giant of all. Before the causeway falls into the sea, never to be seen again, which giant is the fastest giant of all? Which giant is the best giant of all? Which giant is the cleverest of them all?
Finn? Oona? or Benandonner? … you’ll need to read it to find out!
Lari Don has created a fun and mischievous take on the creation of the Giants Causeway, inspired by Celtic folklore. It’s a superb step back in time to when giants roamed our lands proclaiming their worth and arguing with anyone who thought differently. With stunning illustrations from Emilie Gill, this is a tremendous addition to every school, library and bookshelf. A must-read adventure with laugh-out-loud moments to entertain everyone who ventures inside their world.
