Trix’s Tree House by Ewa Jozefkowicz, Illustrated by Gillian Flint

A Woodland Explorer’s Club.

Luckily, with Mum taking a moment to read quietly by the ‘reading tree’, Trix has the opportunity to build herself a den. Not just any den, Trix has perfected her den making skills!

As Trix has a break from the hustle and bustle surrounding her younger brothers, she explores the woods but then she notices something is different; there aren’t as many flowers as there used to be.

Too soon it’s time for Mum and Trix to head for home. As they leave the woods, Trix is sure she sees someone moving in the woods, with no time to investigate, she’s left with the question, who is the mysterious lady?

A meeting at school of the Woodland Explorers Club is called when their teacher, Mr Zhou asks the class to do some research of their own to answer their questions.

  1. Why are there less woodland flowers than before?
  2. Why are there less bees in the wood these days?

If only the others would listen to her.

Upset by their insistence on helping to save the larger animals in the woods, Trix begins to feel she is alone. When she escapes to the woods she encounters the mysterious lady, Bea, and learns they are both on the same path, that of helping wildlife to thrive in the woods.

Can meeting Bea help Trix to persuade her friends the insects are just as important as the larger creatures?

I loved how much information is packed into such an engaging short story with an interesting group of characters and a real emphasis on the importance of friendship and teamwork.

The illustrations by Gillian Flint add to the humour of the story and I loved the map at the beginning of the book.

Interspersed with fascinating facts and extracts from Trix’s Woodland Explorer’s notebook, there is surely something of interest for everyone.

Why not make a fabulous tube house for bees yourself? Follow Trix’s instructions and you’ll soon have one ready to welcome the solitary bees near you.

An important and timely book.

This is the fourth book in the fabulous ‘Woodland Explorers’ chapter book series.
