Checkpoints, soldiers and questions about who he is and what he’s doing, are unfortunately all part of Adam’s daily grind. Making deliveries for his father’s shop across an alternative London, he often finds himself stepping up to the strictly controlled entrance and exist boundaries within the city, with fear in his heart. Those from the ghetto, just like him, are not welcome to cross. Always under surveillance, always scrutinised and always fearful that maybe one day he will be marched away at gunpoint to whatever fate they deem appropriate. He has no say, no voice and no chance to make a stance. His family name, his address, his father’s line of work – all encourage ignorance and disrespect from those in power, something he wishes he could change but he has to toe the line otherwise there will be no money coming their way. It’s a huge responsibility but one he has grown to accept.
All that changes the day he meets the Tyger. A magical creature, the likes he has never seen before. It is trying to get home to another world and needs Adam’s help. However, there’s a handsome reward on its head and Adam knows that money like that could change his family’s life forever but the more time he spends with Tyger, the more he is torn between the choices he now needs to make.
With the help of his friend, Zadie, they try to locate The Guardians, the only people who can unlock the gates and help Tyger. With authorities closing in on Tyger’s secret den, it’s a race against time for Adam and Zadie to find them.
There are secrets in old London, secrets he cannot tell a living soul. The more he learns about the magic that he’s unleashed within himself, the more he takes risks, putting himself and others in danger as he learns his craft. Its power is such that it that makes him reconsider everything he thought he knew about himself and the world he lives in. Can Adam realise his true potential and change his life forever? Will Tyger be captured and miss its only chance to return back to its world?
SF Said has created, with tremendous illustrations by Dave Mckean, an edge-of-the-seat, fast-paced adventure of acceptance, friendship and endurance that will have every reader devouring the pages, desperate to know what happens next. Race, status and inclusion are all key motives in this brilliant story of refusing to accept your fate, perseverance and hope. Tyger will stay in my heart for a long time yet.
