Handstand

HandstandHandstand from Lisa Stickley is a lovely picture book with plenty of character, that also happens to combine counting to seven.

Meet Edith – a fabulous character who adores handstands. The problem is that she keeps getting distracted by a whole host of wonderful wildlife.

On Monday she manages a handstand for one second, on Tuesday she manages it for two seconds before a worm complains her hand is right next to his ‘preferred popping-up place.’

Bees, spiders and ice-lollies all present themselves as quite worthwhile distractions as Edith works hard at her handstands as the week progresses. Her little chats with the characters that pop up provide plenty of little giggles.

There’s a wonderful charm to Stickley’s illustrations – a mix of collage, painting  and line drawing. The typography echoes Edith’s character brilliantly, and I love how each number is presented in both its numerical and word format… in true Edith style of course.

Handstand by Lisa Stickley is fun wonderfully produced picture book.
