They said I couldn’t change the world;
it wasn’t worth the fight.
But in my head, a small voice said…
maybe you might.
It’s so easy for kids, and us adults, to feel overwhelmed by the climate emergency and to think that we won’t make a difference no matter what we do. But maybe we might! That’s the message of this absolute beauty of a book, written by debut author Imogen Foxell, illustrated by Anna Cunha and published by Lantana.
Our child narrator lives in an arid, desolate place, with no greenery at all. But then she finds a seed! She plants the seed in the ground, even though she fears it won’t grow – because maybe it just might. She waters it, shelters it, until eventually…
Above the ground it put up leaves,
below it reached down roots.
Its branches curved above our heads.
Then one day we found… fruits!
And this is just the start. The landscape rebounds, the explosion of life vividly depicted in the stunning illustrations. Even when there’s a setback, after a storm fells the original tree, all is not lost.
Lantana books always seem to have beautiful endpapers, and this one is no different. Kids will love comparing the bare, lifeless image at the beginning to the lush gorgeousness of the final scene.
Full of much-needed hope and positivity, Maybe You Might feels like a classic in the making.
