The chatty and relaxed diary format of Jeff Kinney’s Diary of A Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever continues to appeal immediately to a wide ranging audience. The comic style elements add visual humour which boys in particular can often latch on to with ease.
In this latest instalment, book 6, the hapless Gregg Heffley launches from one near disaster to another, set against the back drop of an ever approaching Christmas.
Modern themes are deftly interwoven in the plot – online games which just try to coerce more and more money from you. Love the comments about his playground at school – which is now completely bereft of play equipment due to a series of perfectly normal accidents – a comment on the perception of a world filled with health and safety madness.
The observational humour is spot on.
There are many comical observations throughout the book (school canteen food), but the central plot develops around the family being snowed in during the approach to Christmas … and then the electricity fails and ketchup is all that Gregg can find for dinner … and the fun begins as the Heffley’s, minus a very fortunate dad. struggle to cope with cabin fever!
