A good old fashioned scary story – enjoyable, entertaining and a great ending.
The Fearsome Beastie by Giles Paley-Philips feels steeped in tradition – of great stories that make being scared so much fun … Little Red Riding Hood, Where the Wild Things Are and The Gruffalo, all spanning many generations.
Kids love to be scared and Giles achieves this in just the right way. The cartoon like, bright bold illustrations ensure the childhood element of fun is included on every page. The great rhyming text add rhythm and delight together with a certain playfulness that keeps children coming back for more.
Love the fact that granny is the hero in this one. Rather than being the one that needs rescuing it is Gran who saves the day,
‘She cuts the beastie right in two
and says “let’s make a beastie stew!’ ‘
… and so all the children come running out of the beastie’s tummy! Beastie stew?! That’s my son’s favourite line!
The Fearsome Beastie is a featured title in our fantastic collection of books for Halloween.
